MANILA (PIA) — Metro Manila disaster response agencies and local government disaster offices are being called on to take part in a run that promotes tsunami awareness and preparedness, with a simple message for the public: when the ground shakes near the coast, move away from the shore.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) will hold “Tsunami! Run for Safety: Shake, Drop, or Roar? Move Away from the Shore!” on Oct. 24 at 5 a.m. at the North Fountain beside Vikings Restaurant at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Organizers said the activity supports the Marcos Jr. administration’s Bagong Pilipinas agenda of building disaster-resilient communities through science-based preparedness, with government agencies and local offices working together to protect Filipino lives.

In Memorandum No. 49 signed by Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) Chairperson and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando S. Artes, the MDRRMC urged all of its member agencies and all National Capital Region (NCR) Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices to join the event in support of tsunami awareness and preparedness efforts.

The run is aimed at keeping tsunami preparedness in the public’s mind and it carries the theme: “Be Tsunami Ready: Resilience Starts With You!”

The fun run event is open to the public. However, as of press time, registration is temporarily closed since all allotted slots have already been filled. Plans are in place to add additional slots.

The activity is also part of the observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day on November 5. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
