MANILA, May 7 (PIA) -- The Land Bank of the Philippines provides the following tips on how to be safe when using its automated teller machine (ATM) along with some tips to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud, ATM scams and/or identity theft.

In a post on its website, www.landbank.gov.ph, the bank said one should:

• Ensure that no one is watching you while keying in your personal identification number (PIN) or any other sensitive information;
• Cover the PIN Pad with your hand when entering your PIN;
• Create a unique PIN. Do not use obvious information such as your phone number, birthday or address;
• Memorize your PIN. Do not write or save it in your gadgets;
• Change your PIN regularly. Change it immediately if you think somebody else knows the number combination.

"Your PIN is your personal property and must be kept secret. Do not share it with anyone, including your relatives and friends," it said.

Likewise, the Landbank said that it has undertaken measures to address unauthorized ATM withdrawals through:

• Daily inspection of all ATM units by its personnel;
• Posting of “Protect your PIN and Paalala” posters near ATMs to promote security awareness to transacting public;
• Equipping all ATM units with cameras;
• Posting of notices about PIN protection on Landbank ATM screens;
• Ongoing installation of PIN Pad Shield and Enhanced Card Reader Bezel. PIN Pad Shield guards against shoulder surfing and helps keep PINs private, while Enhanced Card Reader Bezel prevents the attachment of a skimmer that captures card information of the cardholder/client; and
• Installing of reminders on the proper use of PIN in conspicuous areas. (LB/RJB/JCP/PIA-NCR)
