CALOOCAN CITY, Sept. 12 (PIA) -- Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan dissuaded barangay officials who are in their third and last term from seeking reelection this October saying he will not tolerate it and it is very much against the law.
"We will not tolerate any barangay official seeking a fourth term. It may have happened in past administrations, but it is against the law and we should set an example to all our constituents," Malapitan said.
This, following a call made by the Commission on Elections to help them prevent barangay officials on their third successive term from running again in the barangay elections on Oct. 28.
"I have already instructed the Barangay Secretariat to prepare a master list of barangay officials who are already on their third straight and last term," Malapitan said.
"Once we have the list, we will immediately coordinate with the Department of the Interior and Local Government and Comelec about it so they can also update their respective list of third termers," he added.
The term of office of a barangay official under Republic Act 8524, which amends Section 43 of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991, specifically states a maximum of three 5-year terms for both barangay chairman and kagawad (councilman).
Caloocan City has 188 barangays, 69 in the first district and 119 in the second district. (PIO/RJB/JCP/PIA-NCR)
