QUEZON CITY, 10 Feb. (PIA) - - Mandaluyong City yesterday (Feb. 9) celebrated two historical events, its 70th Liberation Day and 21st Cityhood anniversary.
Mandaluyong City was proclaimed highly urbanized city of Metro Manila on February 9, 1994 under Republic Act 7675. On the same month and day, 49 years earlier (February 9, 1945), it was granted independence by the Japanese Imperial Army.
The city government lined up several activities for its double celebration: on February 6, at 4 in the afternoon, a First Friday Mass was held at the city gym and at 7PM the Liberation Ball where the city government honors model citizens thru its “Gawad Ulirang Mandaleño”. Included in the honorees were the 10 top taxpayers of the city; February 7 – 7PM was the crowning of the Miss Mandaluyong which was also held at the city gym; February 8 – the coronation of the Bilbiling Mandaluyong. On February 9 which is the actual celebration day, a Commemorative Program was held in the morning and a Liberation Day Parade was held in the afternoon.
Other activities include: job fair, medical mission, band contests, dancesports competition, fun run, inter-high school quiz bee, oratorical and declamation contests a grand fluvial parade. Mayor BenHur Abalos also delivered the State of the City Address.
Thru its slogan, “Gawa Hindi Salita” (Performance rather than Words) Mandaluyong City boasts of several national awards: 2014 1ST Year Maintenance Award for Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition, 2013 CROWN Award, 2011 Presidential Award for Most Child-Friendly City in the Highly Urbanized category, Galing Pook multiple winner, National Kabalikat Award, Philippines” Most Business Friendly City and holder of the Child Friendly and Housekeeping Seal.
Mandaluyong City is also known as the “Tiger City” for its remarkable rate of development. It is the 2nd smallest city in Metro Manila but it is now one of the most progressive economic centers in the country hosting big shopping malls, entertainment centers, towering buildings, commercial and industrial areas, plush villages, call centers, schools, condominiums and hotels.
