U.S. Embassy, affiliated offices closed on February 16 for U.S. President’s Day

MANILA, 15 February (PIA) – The Embassy of the United States in Manila and its affiliated offices are closed on Monday, February 16, 2015 in observance of President’s Day, an American holiday.

According to the U.S. Embassy, until the mid 1970s, the February 22 birthday of George Washington, hero of the Revolutionary War and first president of the United States, was a national holiday.

Likewise, the February 12 birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the president during the Civil War (1861-1865) was also a holiday in most states.

In order to honor all past presidents of the United States, the US Congress in the 1970s declared a single holiday to be called Presidents' Day that will be observed every third Monday of February.

Meanwhile, the embassy and its affiliated offices will resume services Tuesday, February 17, 2015. (US Embassy, Manila/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
