QUEZON CITY, 14 May (PIA) – The National Youth Commission (NYC) called on the youth and first time voters to register and vote in 2016.
NYC yesterday launched its campaign for voters’ registration dubbed “Rock the Vote: Isang Milyong Boto, Kumilos para sa Pagbabago” at the Palma Hall of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.
The campaign aims to hit one million mark to accomplish the Commission on Elections’ (COMELEC) target of three million new voters by 2016.
“We are optimistic with our target as we work together with other youth stakeholders,” said NYC Chairperson Gio Tiongson.
Tiongson also stressed that encouraging young people to register and vote is no longer just a responsibility of COMELEC. “Everybody has a role to play,” he added.
COMELEC spokesperson Director James Jimenez, during the campaign launch, also urged the youth and first time voters to register and exercise their right to vote next year. He also promoted the iRehistro, an online platform designed by COMELEC for voters’ registration via www.irehistro.com or www.comelec.gov.ph.
The iRehistro is available for NCR and CAR.
Meanwhile, NYC ASEC JP Penol said that they will bring the voters’ registration campaign to different schools and communities to encourage more young people to register and vote.
Penol stressed that the youth can decide for the country’s future through participation in the electoral process.
“We are also distributing information materials to bridge the information gap with the youth,” he added.
The “Rock the Vote” campaign is in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), YouthVotePhilippines, First Time Voters’ Network, Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation, Ignite-UP NCPAG, and other stakeholders.
The deadline for voters’ registration, manual or online, is on 31 October 2015. NYC will engage the youth through voters’ education after the registration date. (NYC/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
