QUEZON CITY, Aug. 19– President Benigno S. Aquino III Aquino led on Wednesday (Aug. 19) the reopening of the newly renovated “Museo ni Manuel L. Quezon,” coinciding with the commemoration of the 137th birth anniversary of former President Manuel Luis Quezon.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines led the renovation of the Quezon museum, where the tomb of the former president and his wife Aurora are located.
President Aquino, together with NHCP Chair Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno, led the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites in honor of Manuel L. Quezon who served as the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944.
During ng the event, H.E. Effie Ben-Matityau, Ambassador of Israel to the Philippines, the Raoul Wallenberg Medal, a posthumous award to the descendants of Manuel L. Quezon in recognition of President Quezon’s implementation of an open door policy, which permitted one thousand two hundred Jews to migrate to the Philippines to escape the horrors of the Holocaust.
The award was received by Ms. Zenaida Quezon Avanceña, Quezon’s daughter.
The museum features the life and political career of President Quezon and the historical context in which he emerged as leader of the country.
It also features a sizeable collection of President Quezon’s memorabilia, a hologram of the President delivering his inaugural address, and various interactive booths and terminals that show information about the Commonwealth period.
The Museum also offers other facilities such as the audio-visual room, which presents a brief documentary about Quezon and the Museum; a gallery dedicated to Aurora Quezon and a re-creation of Manuel Quezon’s office as Commonwealth President.
Last year, the Quezon City government opened to the public the Quezon Heritage House, also located the Quezon City Memorial Circle. The house was transferred to the QMC from its original location on Gilmore street.(PIA-NCR/RJB/SDL)
