PNoy: Philippines now called Asia’s new darling

PASAY CITY, Oct. 30 (PIA)--President Benigno Aquino III said on Thursday, October 29, that the Philippines has been transformed from an economic laggard in the region into the "Darling of Asia" under his watch.

Aquino was the guest of honor and speaker at the 17th Asia Pacific Retailers Convention held at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

He said that since his assumption into office in 2010, the Philippines has climbed the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Rankings from 85th now the country is now at the 47th place.

He added under his watch, the GDP growth has been one of the region’s fastest, clocking in at 6.2 percent average over the last five years.

Aquino said that his administration had to undertake drastic reforms to strengthen the system and reinvent the image of the entire country.

“We plugged leaks and closed loopholes in processes, instituted transparency and accountability, went after corrupt, and leveled the playing field,” Aquino said.

“We invested, and continue to invest massive resources into our greatest competitive advantage: the Filipino people,” the President added.

Aquino bared reforms such channeling funds into health, social services, education, and welfare have been undertaken to empower Filipinos to take part in the growing industry and the economy at large.

These reforms plus an aggressive marketing campaign, according to the President, has been extremely successful.

“We did not only revamp our image, we also effected true change,” Aquino said.

The grand convention and exhibition was organized by the Federation of Asia Pacific Retailers Association (FAPRA), composed of 17 national retail association in Asia Pacific which includes Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Hongkong, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Mongolia, Fiji, and Turkey.

The Asia Pacific Retail Convention and Exhibit is the main activity of the FAPRA. Every two years, FAPRA members vote for a member association to host the event for retailers in the Asia Pacific Region.

The event has become Asia’s largest and longest-running retail convention and exhibition since it was first held in 1983.

The APRCE aims to discover new approaches to the region’s retailers and highlight innovative solutions that can help retailers differentiate themselves from competitors, and deliver greater value to consumers in Asia Pacific.

This year’s APRCE has adopted the theme “Asia Fast Forward” to highlight the region’s growing strength as an economic community. (PIA-NCR/RJB/SDL)
