QC vows to continue climate change mitigation efforts

QUEZON CITY, 08 April (PIA)--The Quezon City Government vowed to help mitigate climate change by promoting environmental awareness and pursuing programs that will contribute to the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint.

During the observance of the Earth Hour 2016, sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) at the Quezon Memorial, Mayor Herbert M. Bautista echoed the QC Government’s role as an active practitioner in reducing carbon footprint by way of adopting and favoring the use of alternative energy sources and mandating green building standards for all construction.

As a concrete step toward these efforts, Mayor Bautista said the City became a signatory to the Paris Pledge of Action to adopt the universal climate agreement made last December 2015.

As a signatory, the mayor said, the city is now committed to maintain a safe and habitable climate, as well as create initiatives to limit temperature rise and enact significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a safe and sustainable level.

The mayor added that part of the efforts also include signing a commitment with 17 mayors from different cities of the country to the Compact of Mayors, a global coalition of city leaders committed to reduce local greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance resilience to climate change and track climate progress publicly.

It was the second time that QC hosted the global event, amidst the dramatic backdrop of its key landmark, the Quezon Memorial Pylon. (QC PAISO/RJB/SDL/PIA-NCR)
