MANILA, May 27 (PIA) – United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip S. Goldberg will lead the Memorial Day ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Fort Bonifacio on Sunday, May 29, at 8:00 a.m.
Ambassador Goldberg will be joined by Philippine government officials, representatives from the diplomatic and consular corps, and members of the American and Filipino veterans’ communities in honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and democracy.
According to the US Embassy Manila, Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May in honor of the men and women who were killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Memorial Day, originally named Decoration Day, originated in the years following the American Civil War. It was named Memorial Day by federal law in 1971.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy Manila and its affiliated offices will be closed Monday, May 30, 2016, in observance of the US Memorial Day, a US Federal holiday. Regular services will resume Tuesday, May 31, 2016. (US EMBASSY MANILA/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
