MANILA, July 27, (PIA)—The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is urging deactivated voters to go to their respective COMELEC offices to reactivate their registration records.
COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez said that out of the 2,284,742 voters who were deactivated due to the lack of biometrics, only 83,717 reactivated from July 15 to 23 with the National Capital Region (NCR) registering the largest number at 48,653.
“There were 1,181,139 voters who registered in the first nine (9) days of the registration period but there are still more than two (2) million whose registrations are still deactivated,” Jimenez said.
Under Republic Act 8189, also known as the Voters Registration Act of 1996, failure to vote in two (2) national elections will result in the deactivation of a registered voter’s right to vote.
“So if you failed to vote in the Barangay elections of 2013 and in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections, you will not be able to vote in the coming Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) elections unless you reactivate,” Jimenez further clarified.
