TAGUIG CITY, August 3 (PIA) – Five high school students from Taguig City bagged gold, silver and bronze medals in the in the recently concluded 2016 International Mathematics Wizard Challenge (IMWCiC) held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Isidro Aguilar of the Department of Education, Division of Taguig-Pateros (DepEd TAPAT) identified the gold medalists as Rose Anne Doblon, Nazka Leosala, and Ella Puerto from Taguig Science High School; the silver medalist, Rhythm Paolo Cabrera of Sen. Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School; and the bronze medalist, Patricia Nicole Panganiban of Sen. Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School. Dr. Aguilar reported that the five Taguig students were among the 240 Filipino medalists who propelled the Philippines to an overall second-place finish behind powerhouse China.
The 350-strong delegation of Filipino elementary and high school students took home 34 gold, 74 silver and 132 bronze medals, with 87 merit awards in the competition that was participated in by Philippines, China, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau.
“Our delegates achieved a very good performance in the contest and we are very happy,” said Dr. Archieval Rodriguez, president of the Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP). Mayor Lani Cayetano was elated by this latest achievement of Taguig City. She lauded the medal-winning Taguig students, saying that their performance would motivate the City to pour more resources on its education programs.
“The way our Taguig students have performed in this tough international competition convinces us that our education programs are on the right track. Their achievements demonstrate that we can compete with the world’s brightest minds, and validate once more our decision to make education a top priority,” Cayetano said. (TAGUIG/RJB/JEGPIA-NCR)
