PRRC launches 'Barangay Kontra Esterorista' shame campaign

SAN JUAN CITY, May 16 (PIA) -- The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), recently launched a shame campaign aimed at stopping the practice of dumping wastes in rivers and creeks in Metro Manila.
PRRC Executive Director Jose Antonio E. Goitia said, under the campaign called “Barangay Kontra Esterorista”, those who were found to be discharging wastes into the rivers and creeks will be labelled “esterorista".
During the launching of the shame campaign, Goitia explained the duties and responsibilities of barangay officials in solid waste management.
According to Goitia, the barangay officials will be responsible in educating the public on proper garbage disposal since PRRC already done its part.
“We’re already done with the clean-up of our rivers and even in educating our public, so we need the help and cooperation of our barangay officials,” he said.
He also noted that the lack of education and discipline among citizens and establishment owners are the primary cause of the continuous dumping of solid wastes into the rivers and tributaries that are also connected to Pasig River.
At the same time, Goitia appealed to incoming barangay officials to take care of the environment and instill discipline among residents in their communities.
DILG USec. Martin B. Diño warned that they would be filing charges against barangay officials who are negligent in maintaining the cleanliness of the rivers and tributaries under their jurisdiction.
Diño assured that those who will be pressed charges will be given due process. (MAPA/PIA-NCR)
