MANILA, July 6 (PIA)-- To alleviate the burden of high cost of hospitalization and medical services, Mayor Joseph Estrada distributed some 1,708 PhilHealth cards to indigent residents and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The ceremonial distribution of the PhilHealth cards was conducted on June 29, 2018 at San Andres Sports Complex with residents of Baseco, Districts 1 to 6 as recipients.
Estrada said the recipients are beneficiaries of the expanded Philhealth program implemented in line with the city’s accelerated health program designed to ensure that marginalized sector will not be burdened anymore in case of health problems and emergencies.
The Mayor said he wants all poor Manileños enrolled to PhilHealth. “I want all qualified families of 896 barangays in Manila be given PhilHealth cards,” he said.
The National Health Insurance Act states that the government should give priority to health as a strategy for achieving economic development and improving the quality of life.
"The Philhealth ID cards can be used for persons who need to undergo dialysis, chemotherapy and cataract operations,” Estrada said.
Estrada explained that as members of the city government sponsored medical insurance, the recipients are entitled to benefits enjoyed by regular members.
He added that all poor Manileños are entitled to subsidized hospitalization, medicines, and other healthcare services in the city’s six newly modernized public hospitals.
Senior citizens, on the other hand, also received free maintenance medicines through the Manila Health Department. (PIA-NCR)
