QUEZON CITY, Oct. 15 (PIA)--The Land Transportation Office (LTO) warned the public against engaging the services of people who manufacture fake licenses, vehicle registrations and car stickers.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Edgar C. Galvante said the agency will not only go after the manufacturers of fake LTO documents, but also those who patronize them.
“As part of our intensified campaign, the LTO will not allow those who will be identified patronizing these illegal operations to obtain or renew driver’s license, while those who will be caught manufacturing fake LTO documents will be criminally charged in court,” Galvante said.
LTO Executive Director Lawyer Romeo Vera Cruz said that the agency is also coordinating with the banking industry in order to check if there are individuals using fake driver’s license as identification.
“We will provide the bank management with the technique to determine fake driver’s license from the real ones,” Vera Cruz added.
Recently, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) raided stalls at the University Belt in Recto Manila that was reported producing fake drivers’ licenses and vehicle registration stickers. Nine individual were arrested during the raid.
The LTO also received information that there are some car dealers and agents who are asking additional payment from car buyers who wanted to choose the ending number of their car plates claiming it as “added service.”
“I urge motorists to pay only the amount indicated in the official receipts, LTO does not charge anything above the prescribed fees,” Galvante said.
He also said that while the LTO is doing its best to solve the backlog in the issuance of vehicle plates, there are people who take advantage of the situation.
“We will not condone this act and put these people where they should be. We can withdraw the accreditation of the erring car dealer and their agents if needed” the LTO head said.
Reports received by the LTO, there are unscrupulous individuals who charge car buyers P3,000 to P5,000 for a “special car plate” with an end number of their choice.
The LTO clarified that to date the agency is not accepting application for special plate since issuance of the same is still suspended. (PIA-NCR)
