QUEZON CITY, Aug. 15 (PIA) — The Government of the Philippines through the Philippine Information Agency, with the support of ASEAN and the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund, launched the #cyberREADI campaign.
The PIA has also partnered with the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication Foundation Inc. for the development of multimedia materials that will highlight the importance and urgency of promoting cyber wellness for the campaign
According PIA Director General Harold Clavite, the #cyberREADi campaign is part of the project proposed by Agency in 2016 under the ASEAN and Japan Media and Information Literacy for the Youth Project to promote cyber wellness among the youth sector.
“The PIA is greatly honored to spearhead this worthwhile and timely project, together with the InfoComm Media Develeopment Authority of Singapore as our partner,” Calvite said during the #cyberREADi launch Wednesday, Aug. 14) at the ASEAN Center, PIA building in Quezon City.
“We decided to specifically focus on cyber wellness for the youth who comprise the biggest and most active segment of internet and social media users,” he added.
In video message shown during the launch, H.E. Kung Phoak, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community said the youth’s prevalent use of social media have made them vulnerable to the improper use of information.
“With enhanced media and information literacy, the youths are expected to become smart consumers and responsible producers of online information,” H.E. Kung Phoak said.
“Through this project, we hope young people in ASEAN would better understand, inquire, create, communicate and think critically while digitally engaged,” he added.
Mr. Tomoyuki Honda, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has drastically improved beyond expectations, exceeding the limitations of time and distance and we are now living in a digital era where ICT is an essential part of our lives.
He said that while we enjoy the benefits of ICT, it is important that we also address the problems and threats that come with it.
“The ASEAN-Japan Media and Information Literacy for the Youth Project of the PIA is a fitting platform to address these issues. The Government of Japan is honored to support the project with the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund,” Honda said.
The campaign towards cyber wellness is based on the ASEAN Core Values on Digital Literacy, which were adopted by the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) in May 2018, and have been noted by the ASEAN Leaders at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in November of the same year.
The acronym READi, which stands for Responsibility, Empathy, Authenticity, Discernment, and Integrity, has been incorporated into the #cyberREADi campaign branding and video concepts, which were grounded on the mixed method study on the targeted youth audience to determine the most effective means of message delivery.
The #cyberREADi campaign will focus on the four (4) themes determined by the ASEAN-Japan MIL Forum namely: developing healthy digital habits; preventing and building resilience against cyberbullying and other negativities in the online environment; inculcating the responsible and discerning use of online/social media, including the consumption and sharing of online content; and keeping safe online.
Part of the campaign is the production of multimedia materials that focus on cyberbullying, online privacy and sharing, online shopping, online gaming, online dating, and online addiction. (PIA InfoComm)
