Museum is a place where historical, scientific, artistic, and cultural artifacts and treasures are kept for everyone to appreciate, study, and understand, while a gallery is a place or space for the exhibition of art, usually visual art.
They are repositories of the people’s skills, talents, knowledge, and ways of life in the past that we need to preserve and pass on to future generations. Museums are the best places to go for anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge and interest in history, culture, and arts.
Regular visits to museums to immerse in history and culture helps us strengthen national identity and pride.
“We have a very rich heritage, so rich that we have a lot to learn and understand about the practices, traditions, and ways of living of our ancestors; we have to embrace the culture that is unique to us, so we can have a better understanding of our roots and of who we are. Let us witness and experience the story of our nation, unraveled and told through our museums,” former Senator Loren Legarda, a staunch advocate of art and culture promotion said.
Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) is observed every month of October to highlight the need to arouse national consciousness and pride in the country’s rich culture and national identity.
It was embodied in Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s. 1991 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino, as well as in Article XIV, Section 14 of the Philippine Constitution, that says, the State shall foster the preservation, enrichment, and dynamic evolution of a Filipino national culture based on the principle of unity in diversity in a climate of free artistic and intellectual expression.
As we observe this year’s MGM with the theme, “Building the Nation, One Exhibit at a time,” which acknowledges the role of museums and galleries as instruments in creating national conscious for Filipinos, let me share with you the various activities and schedules for your trip down memory lane at the historic wall of Intramuros, a site of numerous museums and galleries.

Do photo walks and take your Instagramable photos inside the museums and galleries in Intramuros, art enthusiasts and even regular visitors will surely enjoy the sights inside the museums and galleries.
On Sunday, October 27, Intramuros Administration is holding an Open House for visitors with free admission at the following museums and galleries: Fort Santiago, Museo ni Jose Rizal, Casa Manila Museum, Fr. George J. Willmann Museum, The Manila Cathedral, Bagumbayan Light & Sound Museum (shows at 1PM, 2PM, 3PM & 4PM), Likha-an sa Intramuros, Destileria Limtuago Museum, iMake History Fortress LEGO Education Center, Bahay Tsinoy Kaisa Heritage Center (opens at 1PM), NCCA Gallery, Instituto Cervantes de Manila, Museo de Intramuros, Museo San Agustin, The Attic Museum, and at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Museum.
The fun continues after your sight-seeing and learning trip inside galleries and museums, visitors can borrow GrabWheels, an eco-friendly but fun mode of transportation that can be used to roam around the walled city. Visitors can borrow them at Plaza Roma for free, from 9AM to 4PM. They can also avail of the free hop-on/off Tranvia Ride or stroll around with Bambike Rentals at Plaza San Luis.
No companion? You can bring your lovable pets during your visit as Intramuros is a pet friendly place, but be responsible enough to pick up your pet’s wastes.
After the tour, visitors can also enjoy shopping at the Old Manila Eco Market and Buskers at Plaza Roma. Old Manila Eco Market brings together a weekend market of all things sustainable. Fresh fruits and vegetables, eco-friendly packages and utensils.
All kinds of plastics are banned so make sure to bring your own eco-friendly items for a hassle-free shopping experience. Prepare your eco bags as fresh fruit and vegetable stands will be present there for every customer who wants to get their healthy supplies.
