Special stamp commemorates 75 years of the Battle of Manila

MANILA, Feb. 24 (PIA) – To commemorate the 75th year of the Battle of Manila, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released commemorative stamp to mark the historic event. 

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat, Jose Miguel Cabarrus, President, Memorare Manila 1945, the association of civilian survivors and descendants of the Battle of Manila and Maximo Sta. Maria III, OIC, Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) Assistant Postmaster General for Marketing led the unveiling of the commemorative stamp in front of the Memorare monument in San Agustin Church located at the historic Intramuros in Manila. 

PHLPost honors the men, women and children who perished during the Battle of Manila seventy-five years ago. The commemorative stamp features the “Memorare” by sculptor Peter de Guzman which stands at the Plazuela de Santa Isabel in Intramuros.

The monument depicts a mother in despair, cradling her lifeless baby in her arms. Inscribe on it is a dedication by National Artist Nick Joaquin which says: “To the innocent lives lost: “We remember them, nor shall we ever forget.”

The Battle of Manila, also called by Americans as “The Liberation of Manila” from February, 1945 to March, 1945 was the bloodiest major battle and the most horrible scene of destruction during World War II. Historians consider Manila as the “most destroyed city” during the war.

The Second World War devastated Manila’s landscape. One of those beautiful buildings that was destroyed was the Manila Central Post Office, a neo-classical building designed by the famous Filipino architect Juan Arellano.

According to PHLPost, some 40,000 copies of the stamp were printed and sold for 12 pesos each. Lay-out was done by PHLPOST in-house graphic artist Rodine C.  Teodoro.

Stamps and Official First Day Covers are now available at the Philatelic Counter, Manila Central Post Office, all Mega Manila Post Offices, Postal Area 4, San Pablo, Postal Area 5, Mandaue, Postal Area 7, Davao, and Postal Area 8, Cagayan de Oro".
