QUEZON CITY, March 3 (PIA)--Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso has signed an ordinance declaring the Arroceros Forest Park as a 'permanent forest park.'
Domagoso signed Ordinance No. 8607 which declares a parcel of land located at Arroceros Street, previously known as "Decs Property," as a permanent forest park and allocated P1 million for the park's operation.
The passage of the ordinance was among the platforms promised by Domagoso during his campaign for the 2019 mayoral elections in Manila.
"The use and enjoyment of the Arroceros Forest Park must be consistent with the principles of sustainable development and the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology," the ordinance read.
The mayor said the development is in pursuant to Republic Act No. 5752 which mandates cities to establish, develop and maintain a permanent forest, tree parks or watersheds within public land.
Under the ordinance, cutting trees, dumping waste products and any form of excavation within the area of the forest park are prohibited.
Violators will be slapped with a P2,500 fine for their first offense, P3,500 fine for their second offense, and P5,000 fine and or imprisonment not exceeding one year depending on the court's discretion for their third offense.
The Manila City government will designate peace officers who will be tasked to issue citations against violators.
It will also create an Arroceros Forest Park Governing Committee which will be mandated to formulate a management plan for the maintenance and operations of the park. (Manila PIO/PIA-NCR)
