LTO readies guidelines on required license, registration for e-bikes, e-scooters

CALOOCAN CITY, Sept. 24 (PIA) -- The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has submitted the draft guidelines on the required license and registration for 2-wheeled e-bikes and e-scooters to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

In a report by PTV-4 News Sentro Balita, LTO Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante said the submitted draft is based on Republic Act 4136 that identifies the vehicle types allowed on the road. This was made through consultations with electric vehicle distributors and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Galvante has pointed out that e-scooters belong to a smaller category that do not need a certificate of registration although it must be listed with their respective local government units (LGUs).

While, electric kick scooters might only be allowed in subdivisions and closed compounds, he said.

While it is not against the idea of registration, the Electric Kick Scooter Philippines Organization, meanwhile, stressed that it is untimely since the country is in the middle of a pandemic.

The LTO, on the other hand, has underscored that safety comes first especially now the number of e-scooters and e-bikes is increasing. (PIA NCR)
