In an exclusive interview with VMMC Director Dr.Dominador M. Chiong, Jr., he said veterans and their eligible dependents who do not have convenient access to the hospital may still benefit adequate medical and health care services.
He said for example, those residing in far-flung areas may apply for reimbursements according to the guidelines of the Veterans Hospitalization and Medical Care Program (VHMCP).
This includes reimbursement on the following:
a. Hospital Subsidy
b. Cataract surgery, orthopedic implants, dentures, hernia mesh, hearing aid, orthopedic braces, hemodialysis treatment, cardiac bypass, coronary angiogram, chemotherapeutic agents, angioplasty, Endoaneurysmectomy for Thoracic/ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Pacemaker placement, Cranial CT Scan, Other CT Scan and MRI procedures, Colonoscopy, Extra corporal Shock Wave Litotripsy (ESWL), Peritoneal Dialysis (IPD and CADP), Rehabilitation services, Ventilator rental, kidney transplant

The VHMCP, according to Dr. Chiong is just one of the many programs of the VMMC in partnership with thePhilippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) to ensure that the Filipino veterans and their kin receive proper health and medical support.
With the ongoing pandemic, the VMMC director said they explored various ways to provide their out-patients with regular maintenance medicines and ensure their safety considering they the most vulnerable sector.
Dr. Chiong said, the VMMC hired several motorcycle riders to deliver medicines right at the doorsteps of their out-patients in Metro Manila. Deliveries are grouped according to area, he said.
“Each rider would serve around 20-30 patients. We also increased the supply of maintenance medicines into three months. Before it was two months,” Dr. Chiong added.

“At least 500 patients were given service through this program, and it is still on-going,” he said.
Aside from the innovative programs, several upgrades in the hospital facilities were developed to provide high standard and quality health and medical services to the veterans and AFP retirees.
“Gone are the days of dripping water from the ceilings during rainy seasons, and gloomy corridors,” Dr. Chiong said.
Among the upgraded facility is the emergency ward with 21 treatment rooms, two main nurse stations and a dedicated rapid assessment section or triage room.
The VMMC now has its heart institute where patients can get free heart operations and other medical support.

The Renal Dialysis Unit, Medical Laboratory, Intensive Care Units with complete equipment were all upgraded, and the hospital now possess all electric beds that gives comfort to patients and ease to health professional attending to them.
Dr. Chiong is also proud to share that the VMMC is the only hospital that has a therapeutic pool in their rehabilitation center.
The Veterans Memorial Medical Center was established in 1955 by virtue of Public Law 865. The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Veterans Administration, provided $9.4 million for the construction of a hospital facility on the land donated by the Filipino people.
The VMMC is the only hospital in the Philippines tasked to provide quality hospitalization, medical care and treatment to Filipino Veterans.
It offers a full range of preventive out-patient and in-patient services, free consultation, treatment, medicines, laboratory, diagnostic tests, and free hospitalization to eligible veterans and their dependents. (PIA-NCR)
