CALOOCAN CITY, June 11 – The Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) together with Commission on Population (POPCOM) held a virtual ceremonial signing on the Social Protection Program for Teenage Mothers and their children.
“This ceremonial signing of partnership agreement with POPCOM aims to address the plight teenage mothers and children,” DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista said in his speech on Thursday, June 10.
This signifies the beginning of the partnership of our agencies to promote the well-being of the country’s youth, he added.
As directed by the national government, the DSWD and POPCOM were tasked to oversee the social protection program and collaborate closely to safeguard the health of teenage mothers and their children.
“We recognize that addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy cannot be resolve by a single agency. It’s urgency for the whole of nation approach on the implementation is indeed crucial,” DSWD Secretary Bautista said.
To integrate the existing social protection program, the POPCOM shall develop recommendations which will then be given to the DSWD.
“We will begin our database that will cover teen mothers and those who are pregnant. This will be the starting point for our data,” POPCOM Executive Director Antonio Perez.
Likewise, the social development secretary cited that the DSWD shall provide technical inputs, review social protection strategy paper, and utilize available resources for this undertaking.
“We hope that through this partnership we can mutually prevent teenage pregnancy and establish sufficient and accessible measures to protect the well-being of teenage mothers and their children” Bautista said. (PIA-NCR)
