Feature: Here's why you should consider vasectomy

by: GELAINE LOUISE GUTIERREZ

According to the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), family planning is a critical component to reduce prevailing poverty.

Apart from abstinence, vasectomy is the most effective form of birth control. Vasectomy (male sterilization) is a surgical operation that permanently prevents pregnancy by cutting or closing the tubes that contain a man's sperm.

No-scalpel (NSV) vs. traditional vasectomy

In a traditional vasectomy, an incision is made on each side of the scrotum. NSV, on the other hand, only uses a needle to cut a small hole in the scrotum.

Here’s why you should consider having one:

1. Shared Responsibility

You can minimize the burden on your female partner by having a vasectomy to avoid unwanted pregnancy, especially when they are unable to tolerate the side effects of hormonal birth controls.

2. No effects on your sex drive

It does not affect your desire for sex or your capacity to enjoy it. You'll still have erections and ejaculate, however, your semen won’t carry sperm cells.

3. Effective in preventing pregnancy

Vasectomy is a highly effective method of birth control for preventing unwanted pregnancies. It reduces a man's chances of conceiving a child with his female partner to fewer than 1 percent.

Birth control pills have an efficacy rate of 91 to 99 percent of preventing pregnancy, but only if your partner takes them correctly every day. Whereas, condoms have a rate of 98 percent when used properly.

4. Safe procedure with a fast recovery period

The procedure takes around 15 minutes and has a low risk of bleeding or infection. The recovery period, on the other hand, will take at least 7-10 days.

After the procedure, you must refrain from sexual activity for at least 7 days. And you'll need to use another method of birth control for the first 8 to 12 weeks because it can take this long to eliminate the remaining sperm in your tubes.

In line with the celebration of World Vasectomy Day, POPCOM-NCR, along with DKT, DOH, and health offices, is going to conduct free vasectomy from November 15 to 19, 2021 in POPCOM Family Wellness Clinic, Mandaluyong City. For further details, you can message POPCOM-NCR on their Facebook page: facebook.com/OfficialPOPCOMNCR.

You can also avail of the service FREE of charge on regular days. (PIA-NCR)
