QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged the men and women of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to remain dedicated to their mandate and to construct and finish critical infrastructure projects on time, on schedule and under budget, during the DPWH's 125th anniversary celebration in Port Area, Manila.
Addressing them during the DPWH 125th, he also urged them to streamline procedures, prevent delays and cost overruns, and enforce transparency measures in all government projects and transactions.
The President cited the government's collaboration with the DPWH and other agencies to enhance efficiency, modernize the bureaucracy, and leverage new technologies and techniques. He emphasized the significance of introducing innovations to current practices within the department to ensure efficient project implementation.
President Marcos acknowledged the collaboration between various government agencies, including the DPWH, Department of Tourism (DOT), and Department of Education (DepEd), emphasizing the need for a unified approach to achieve common goals. He declared the DPWH as the lead department due to its size and encouraged other agencies, including his own office, to support the department's initiatives for success.
Moreover, the President urged the DPWH to go beyond physical infrastructure and embrace inclusive and accessible design. He emphasized the importance of considering the needs of all individuals, including people with disabilities, pregnant women, the elderly, and the very young. Additionally, President Marcos advised incorporating elements of Filipino culture and history into infrastructure designs to foster a sense of pride and belonging within communities.
He highlighted the significance of harnessing technological advancements and innovations in the development of infrastructure systems. He emphasized the importance of resilience, dependability, adaptability, and sustainability to benefit future generations.
"We will harness the power of technological advancements and innovations in the development of our infrastructure systems," said Marcos. "And most importantly, ensure the resilience, the dependability, adaptability, and sustainability of our structures so that even future generations will use and benefit from it."
During the celebration, the President congratulated the awardees who exemplified the department's core values and made significant contributions to society. He expressed his hope that their example would inspire colleagues and the new generation of public workers to build on their legacy and work for the benefit of the Filipino people.
He commended the DPWH for its decades-long service and recognized its achievements in constructing majestic government buildings, dams, irrigation systems, bridges, and highways that connect the country's many islands.
Tracing its roots back to the Department of War and Public Works established in 1898, the DPWH celebrated its 125th anniversary under the theme "Makasaysayang Daan Tungo sa Maunlad na Kinabukasan" (Historic Roads Towards a Prosperous Future).
The President Marcos expressed his optimism over DPWH's commitment to infrastructure development and innovation that would have significant part to the administration's 8-point Socioeconomic Agenda and bring progress and prosperity to the Filipino people. (PIA-NCR)
