Supreme Court releases permitted, prohibited items during Bar exams

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Philippines’ Supreme Court (SC) released permitted and prohibited items during the upcoming Bar exams in September.

Bar Chairperson Justice Mario V. Lopez recently issued Bar Bulletin No. 4 or the Policy on Academic Honesty, General Guidelines and Undertakings for the 2024 Bar Examinations.

The Bar Examinations is a rite of passage to ensure that new lawyers are competent and ethically prepared in the practice of law. It serves as a stamp of approval to safeguard and preserve the public’s confidence in the legal profession,” the bulletin states.

Prohibited items for the upcoming Bar exams include:

  • Mobile phones
  • Tablets
  • Cameras
  • Watches (any kind)
  • USB dongles
  • Flash drives
  • Earphones and headsets
  • Noisy keyboards
  • Vapes/cigarettes
  • Unauthorized medical devices
  • Lighters
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Firearms
  • Bladed weapons
  • Improvised explosive devices
  • Other similar items capable of inflicting bodily harm


Permitted items are divided into two categories:

Tech-related

  • 1 laptop bag/sleeve
  • 1 laptop, 1 laptop charger
  • USB-C to USB-A adapter
  • External WiFi adapter
  • Two-pin A plug adapter
  • Webcam cover
  • Keyboard protector/skin cover
  • Mouse pad (without markings)
  • External low-noise keyboard (may be wired or wireless, provided that the receiver is not a USB dongle)
  • External mouse


Not tech-related

  • Non-electronic foam earplugs
  • Packed lunch
  • Light snacks and/or candies
  • Water and/or non-alcoholic beverages
  • Reusable water containers/tumblers
  • 1 pen
  • 3 sharpened non-mechanical pencils
  • Physical copies of reading materials
  • Small religious or spiritual items
  • Prayer mats
  • Wallets (cash, credit and debit cards, and other small personal effects)
  • Personal battery-powered fan (not larger than 4” in diameter)
  • House and/or car keys
  • Solid ointments
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medicine
  • Change of clothes, umbrella, jackets, raincoats, and/or water boots
  • Small hygiene-related items
  • BCO-authorized medical devices/instruments
  • Other items authorized by the BCO


The Bar examinees are also reminded of the proper attire during the exam.

  • Comfortable but decent clothes
  • Sleeved tops
  • Dress or pants below the knee level
  • Closed footwear

Meanwhile, prohibited tops include: sleeveless, such as sando, spaghetti, crop top, ripped sleeves, etc., or any other sleeveless top.

Prohibited bottoms include any item shorter than knee-length or ripped, such as mini-skirts, shorts, or ripped jeans.



Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) announced that the 2024 online Bar examinations will be conducted on September 8, 11, and 15 in 13 local testing centers (LTCs) across the country.

The six LTCs in the National Capital Region are located at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City; University of Santo Tomas in Sampaloc, Manila; San Beda University in San Miguel, Manila; Manila Adventist College in Pasay City; University of the Philippines in Bonifacio Global City; and San Beda College in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

Meanwhile, the LTCs in Luzon are at the Saint Louis University in Baguio City and the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City.

In Visayas, the LCTs are at the University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu City, Central Philippine University in Iloilo City, and the Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation in Tacloban City.

Moreover, the LTCs in Mindanao are at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City and Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City.
