PASIG CITY (PIA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) is actively enhancing its collaboration with various agencies and partners to guarantee a secure and nurturing learning environment, reflecting President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s emphasis on the crucial role of all sectors in safeguarding the youth.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara discussed with President Marcos Jr. the department’s steps to further strengthen school safety and preparedness in dealing with threats to the security of our youth.
“Checking in on our learners is an inherent strength of our educators, lalo na ang ating mga class adviser na nakakasalamuha nila araw-araw. Following President Bongbong Marcos’ mandate, we must ensure that our teachers truly know their learners, that do not just teach, but also actively check on their learners’ well-being,” said Angara.
On strengthening prevention and preparation in schools, DepEd noted the need to increase school surveillance like installation of CCTVs and provision of metal detectors.
The conduct of national and localized school drills and classroom-based discussions on child protection are also highly encouraged.
In line with this, a Nationwide School Safety Drill is set on August 25 as part of DepEd’s continued strengthening of safety and preparedness in schools which also aligns with the directive of President Marcos Jr. for safer learning environments.
Students are also encouraged to actively participate in school clubs and organizations, while parents or guardians are advised to participate in the Parent Engagement Program led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
To further protect and support learners, the Learners TeleSafe Contact Center Helpline is ready to listen, support, and assist learners and parents.
In partnership with the National Center for Mental Health, DepEd continues to strengthen counseling, referrals, and access to professional support.
DepEd expands peer counseling programs in school together with the Department of Health (DOH), the DSWD, and guidance counselor associations. The program aims to empower youth to be more active partners in reaching out, listening, and understanding their fellow students to create a safer, more caring, and supportive school environment.
Meanwhile, DepEd also further strengthens coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local authorities for the security of learners. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
