PASAY CITY, August 1, (PIA) - - Taguig City is this year’s conferee of the highest regional award in nutrition, the Green Banner Award, given by the National Nutrition Council- National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) during the 2016 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held on July 28, 2016 in Pasay City. This is the third consecutive year Taguig City was awarded the Green Banner which qualifies the City for the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) to be conferred during the national awarding ceremony later this year. Green Banner Award is given to a local government unit (LGU) who scored more than 90% during the annual Monitoring and Evaluation of the Local Level Implementation (MELLPI) of the nutrition programs of the city. MELLPI is being conducted by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team, RNET composed of focal persons from government agencies (NGAs), non-government organizations and spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council-National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) with Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC)l Milagros Villegas Federizo leading the team. Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano in her acceptance speech said that her administration is determine to promote good nutrition as this is the root to all good happenings in the city. Foremost of these are: the drop in the prevalence of maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate, being the regional topnotcher for two consecutive years in the National Achievement Test (NAT) and other things. Cayetano attributed the award to innovative programs and projects being implemented by the city government and, the hardworking City Nutrition Committee (CNC) headed by a full time City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Ms. Julie Bernabe. The City also takes pride that all their barangays have functional barangay nutrition committee who worked closely with the CNC to ensure that all their efforts are geared toward the nutrition improvement of the city. Through the efficient implementation of their nutrition program and the collaboration and effort of the barangay and city nutrition committees, the city’s prevalence rate of underweight among children 0-71 months old has gone down from 3.82% in 2011 to 0.55% in 2015. The prevalence rates of wasting, stunting and overweight among preschool children also continued to decline over the past three years. Taguig City is also a conferee of a special award as the “Most Efficient in Nutrition Program Management” given by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team ably headed by NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Villegas Federizo. The award is given to an LGU that has efficiently implemented their nutrition programs based on their prioritized target beneficiaries. The drop in malnutrition rate in all forms are also considered. The Green Banner Award is the highest nutrition award given to a local government unit (LGU) with excellent implementation and management of nutrition programs. Outstanding LGUs in Metro Manila and BNSs were determined by the inter-agency Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) based on the results of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and BNS Evaluation conducted earlier this year. The annual RNAC serves as an advocacy strategy to encourage local chief executives and their local nutrition committees to effectively and efficiently plan and manage their nutrition programs and sustain their gains to contribute to the improvement of the nutrition situation in the region. In her closing speech, Mayor Cayetano gave assurance of their commitment to further strengthen nutrition programs in the city. She also thanked Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita “Menchie” Abalos, Pasig City Mayor Robert “Bobby” Eusebio who were present in the awarding and the other city mayors who served as their inspiration and model to work hard for the good health of their constituents.
