Washable pads: An eco-friendly solution for feminine care

 by: Gelaine Gutierrez

QUEZON CITY (PIA) – “Plastic pollution continues to spread across ecosystems with devastating effects, particularly on our oceans,” according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna during the Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region’s (EMB-NCR) Solid Waste Management Summit on January 27 at the Richmonde Hotel – Eastwood in Quezon City.

The two-day summit aims to highlight the best zero-waste management practices of local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila and other stakeholders, strengthening the collective commitment to sustainable resource use and waste reduction. It also features innovative and sustainable products from various LGUs and small businesses, including WorkingMum‘s washable pantyliners and sanitary pads.

From hobby to sustainability

Cecille Guevarra, the founder of WorkingMum, turned her sewing passion into a successful business by developing washable sanitary pads and pantyliners. Her story began when she learned sewing as a practical way to avoid costly clothes alterations. Her best friend, who has a family history of cervical cancer, asked for a reusable alternative to disposable pads, which sparked the idea for washable pads.

Initially unaware of the environmental benefits, Cecille then learned that the initiative was aligned with a zero-waste lifestyle, which she adopted eventually. Realizing that women spend nearly half of their lives using disposable sanitary pads, which generate a significant amount of waste, Cecille made it her mission to offer a more sustainable solution.

She appreciates her husband for his constant support of the business and for teaching the value of sustainability to their children. Cecille also adds that caring for washable pads is simple: soak them for 30 minutes to an hour before washing them like regular underwear. You change them three times a day, just like you would with disposable pads, but washable pads do not have to be thrown away, making them a more eco-friendly choice.

Take action now

Former President Benigno S. Aquino III declared January National Zero Waste Month, and government units, agencies, and other sectors are encouraged to support the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003), which promotes environmental awareness and community participation in waste management programs.

The “Zero Waste” campaign urges individuals to embrace sustainable behaviors that reduce waste, eliminate pollutants, and conserve resources through effective material reuse and recycling.

As we celebrate National Zero Waste Month, remember that every small action matters toward saving our environment for future generations. Will you join the movement for a cleaner, more sustainable world? (GLDG/PIA-NCR)
