PASAY CITY, (PIA) — The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Saturday has called on state media practitioners to strengthen their role in risk and crisis communications, especially amid the increasing frequency of typhoons and other natural calamities.

In a welcome remarks delivered by Assistant Secretary Julius N. Leonen on behalf of Press Secretary Cesar B. Chavez, the PCO highlighted the importance of accurate and timely information in building public trust and empowering communities.

The Philippines, as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, needs a strong and resilient media sector to help us navigate these challenges,” Leonen said.

It can be recalled that in less than a month, starting October 21, the Philippines has experienced six tropical cyclones, beginning with Kristine (Trami) and Leon (Kong-rey); followed in November by Marce (international name Yinxing), Nika (Toraji), Ofel (Usagi) and Pepito (Man-yi).

In response, the PCO has organized a workshop titled “Covering the Crisis: Media Workshop on Disaster Communications” at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, to equip state journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to report on disasters effectively.

The workshop will feature discussions on weather systems, climate change, and disaster response, led by experts from government agencies such as DOST-PAGASA, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Philippine Navy, and Office of Civil Defense.

By fostering stronger collaborations between media and government, we can create a data-driven system for effective disaster communication,” Leonen added. (JVD/PIA-NCR)
