MANILA, (PIA) — The Livelihood, Education, and Rehabilitation Center (LERC), in partnership with the Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Sanitarium (DJNRMHS), is set to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 4, 2024.

The event, which will benefit persons with disability (PWD), will take place in the morning at the hospital’s covered court in Barangay Tala, Caloocan City.

In a letter to Philippine Information Agency-National Capital Region Director Emver Cortez, LERC Administrator and event organizer Richard D. Arceño expressed excitement about the upcoming celebration, which aims to highlight the achievements of their partnership in raising awareness and promoting actions that benefit PWDs and their families.

Arceño said the event will feature a program centered around the theme “Localizing Disability Inclusive Programs.”

Key activities include a forum discussing the role of local government units in inclusive disability initiatives, the celebration of the first anniversary of the Green Kafé—the first PWD-managed coffee and bakeshop in collaboration with DJNRMHS —and a tour of the hospital’s Prototype Disability Inclusive Development Program.

The celebration, he said, are geared towards paving the way for greater inclusive programs that involve more local government agencies and private partners, fostering a community that supports the needs of PWDs.

It can be recalled that the Philippines observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, by virtue of the 1992 Proclamation of the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 and Proclamation No. 1157, s. 2006.

The observance advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities and promotes collaboration to enhance their well-being and participation in national development.

This year’s theme is “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” which asserts the vital role of PWDs as leaders at every level.

This theme directly aligns with current global policies, including the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, driving powerful momentum toward achieving the 2030 Agenda. (JMP/PIA-NCR)
