QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Philippines and Cambodia aimed at enhancing cooperation in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and government digital transformation.

Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John E. Uy and Cambodian Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth signed the MOU, the event marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cambodia

This enables us to undertake mutually beneficial initiatives, such as sharing technical expertise, promoting ICT projects, and organizing capacity-building engagements,” President Marcos said during the event.

The agreement allows both nations to exchange knowledge and best practices related to digital transformation, focusing on platforms like the Philippines’ eGovPH app and Cambodia’s Verify.gov.kh.

It aims to foster collaboration on ICT projects, support enterprise development, and facilitate consultations and capacity-building initiatives.

This agreement reflects our shared commitment to leveraging innovation for the benefit of our constituents. By working together, we are not just enhancing digital governance; we are shaping a future where innovation drives inclusive progress and a truly interconnected ASEAN,” Secretary Uy said.

The signing followed productive discussions between Uy and Vandeth, highlighting the significant progress of the eGovPH app and the digital technology transfer of the Verify platform.

The eGovPH app has been recognized as a groundbreaking achievement, setting a precedent for other countries in Asia and Africa to explore similar digital initiatives.

In addition to the ICT MOU, several other agreements were presented during the ceremony, including an Agreement for the Elimination of Double Taxation, MOUs on Agricultural and Agribusiness Cooperation, Technical Vocational Education and Training, Implementation of Competition Law, and the Prevention of Looting and Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property.

A Memorandum of Intent on Investment Promotion was also introduced.

As the Philippines approaches the 70th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with Cambodia in 2027, this partnership signifies a pivotal step toward maximizing the potential of ICT for the benefit of both nations’ citizens. With these initiatives, the Philippines aims to strengthen its position as a regional leader in digital transformation, guided by President Marcos’s vision of a digitally empowered nation. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
