MANILA, (PIA) — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is inviting the public at it leads the commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the Start of the Philippine-American War on Tuesday, February 4, at 8:00 a.m. at the corner of Sociego and Silencio Streets in Manila.
The event will feature the raising of the Philippine flag and a flower-laying ceremony, organized in collaboration with the City of Manila, ACT Teachers Party List, the NHCP, the University of the Philippines (UP), and Barangay 586, Zone 57. Dr. Ricardo Trota Jose from the Department of History at UP will serve as the guest of honor.
The Philippine-American War officially began on February 4, 1899, at the junction of Sociego and Silencio Streets in Sampaloc, Manila.
The conflict was ignited when three Filipino soldiers, led by Corporal Anastascio Felix, were fired upon by American soldiers Private William Grayson and Private Orville Miller of the First Nebraska Volunteers.
This incident escalated into a gunfight between Filipino and American troops, effectively ending peace negotiations.
The NHCP is the national agency tasked with promoting and preserving the country’s heritage through research, publications, heraldry, conservation, and the designation of historical sites and structures, as well as the management of national shrines and museums. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
