QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — Roger and Mae have been living together for over 13 years.
The couple however, still plans to get married one day.
“Di pa kami kasal. Mga 13 years na po kaming nagsasama. Hindi naman po sa ayaw naming magpakasal, isa po sa dahilan yung budget. Kasi si Roger po eh gusto niya sa simbahan kami ikasal,” explained Mae.
Roger and Mae are among the couples living together but remain unmarried.
They are part of the statistics that indicate a 13.9 percent decrease in registered marriages in the past 10 years, from 60,238 in 2014 to 51,892 in 2023.
The 2023 statistics released by the Philippine Statistics Authority National Capital Region (PSA-NCR), showed the downward trend of marriages in NCR or Metro Manila.
Based on PSA data released in February, a 5% decrease was recorded from the total marriages of 54,629 in 2022 down to 51,892 in 2023.
According to PSA-NCR, Quezon City registered the most number marriages among the 16 cities and one municipality, with 15,901 or 30.6 percent share of total marriages.
The City of Manila recorded the second-highest number with 8,564 or 16.5 percent share followed by the City of Caloocan with 5,736 or 11.1 percent share.
Malabon City posted the highest increase in registered marriages, with 25.2 percent, from 761 in 2022 to 923 in 2023. In contrast, the City of Valenzuela experienced the largest decrease, with a negative 17.1 percent, from 3,202 in 2022 to 2,623 in 2023.
Registered marriages reveal that February recorded the highest number of occurrences, with 7,996 marriages, accounting for 15.4 percent of the total marriages. In contrast, the months of August and November had the lowest numbers of registered marriages, with 3,240 and 3,205, respectively, each accounting for approximately 6.2 percent of the total.
In terms of the daily average, the months of February, March, June, and December recorded higher daily averages of 286, 145, 164, and 187 compared to the region’s average of 142. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
