MANILA, (PIA) — The Department of Energy (DOE) announced Wednesday that 912 publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations are now operational across the Philippines as of March 31, marking a significant expansion of the country’s EV infrastructure.

The initiative focuses primarily on the National Capital Region to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles, according to energy officials.

The DOE plans to introduce new regulatory guidelines to ensure a “safe, efficient, and sustainable charging network,” with implementing guidelines for charging station providers to be published soon. These will detail installation standards, particularly for fast chargers that rapidly deliver energy to EV batteries.

Our goal of deploying over 7,000 EV charging stations by 2028 is ambitious but achievable,” said Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick T. Aquino. “By combining infrastructure development with public engagement, we can accelerate the transition to EVs and build a cleaner, more sustainable transportation sector.”

Public consultations will be conducted in the coming months to gather feedback on key initiatives, including the strategic placement of charging stations at gasoline stations and the integration of the Charging Infrastructure Development Plan with the Distribution Development Plan to optimize grid capacity.

Officials also plan to address the installation of charging stations in dedicated parking areas to improve accessibility for EV users nationwide.

The expansion aligns with the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry, which sets a short-term goal of deploying 7,300 charging stations by 2028.

The DOE has invited the public to visit the Philippine Electric Vehicle Industry Portal at EVIndustry.ph for more information. (JLN/PIA-NCR)
