QUEZON CITY, 3 Feb.(PIA) - - Pasig City is the National Capital Region’s (NCR) bet for the 2015 Presidential Award for the Most Child-Friendly City in the highly urbanized category.
The city was chosen because it got the highest point in the Child-Friendly Local Governance Audit (CFLGA) which was conducted by members of the Regional Committee for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) and spearheaded by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Under the CFLGA, all cities and municipalities shall be assessed to gauge their level of performance in implementing child-friendly programs and instituting measures that promote children’s welfare.
After the CFLGA, the 4-member National Awards Committee (NAC) with members from the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) made a validation visit to the city on the 2nd week of January.
Among the areas validated by the group were Planning and Policy Formulation, Budget, Health and Nutrition, Education, Social Protection, Institutional Bodies for Children, Child Participation and Community Participation.
Pasig City prides itself with a city-owned children hospital (Child’s Hope), feeding program for day care and school children, rainforest, Gender and Development (GAD) Programs, Health, Nutrition and Education Services and Child Protection programs.
Pasig will vie with the cities of Davao, Puerto Princesa, Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod.
Winners in the Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Cities and Municipalities will be conferred by President Benigno Aquino at the Malacañan Palace on March 2015.
The Presidential Awards for the Most Child-Friendly Cities and Municipalities is conferred to deserving local government units in recognition of their vital role in the sustained promotion of children’s rights to survival, development, protection and participation as well as in ensuring child-friendly governance.
This was initiated by the CWC pursuant to Executive Order No. 184 entitled “Establishing the Presidential Award for the Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities” issued on December 13, 1999.
The Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities aim to encourage local government units (LGU) at all levels to prioritize and address issues/concerns affecting the full realization of the rights of children and give national recognition to cities and municipalities that have been considered and confirmed as “child-friendly”.
