MANILA (PIA) — Malacañang said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. supports the passage of an anti-political dynasty law, identifying it as one of his administration’s priority measures.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said Marcos wants the proposed legislation passed during his term, while acknowledging that the timeline for congressional action remains under the authority of Congress.
“Alam na po natin na ito po ang isa sa mga priority bills ng Pangulo,” Castro said during a Palace press briefing, Thursday. “Talaga po ito ay pinapamadali niya at gusto po niya hangga’t maaari sa panahon po niya ay maipasa ang anti-political dynasty law.”
Castro made the statement in response to questions about reports concerning a supposed Supreme Court directive on the enactment of an anti-political dynasty law.
She clarified that, based on the information available to the Palace, no decision had yet been issued by the Supreme Court on the matter.
The Palace official said the president agrees that a law addressing political dynasties should be enacted, but stressed that Congress is responsible for determining the measure’s legislative timetable.
“Ang timeline po ng mga Kongreso ay nasa kanila po itong kamay,” Castro said.
She added that lawmakers are handling several responsibilities and legislative priorities, but reiterated that the president wants the anti-political dynasty measure passed.
The 1987 Constitution provides that the state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties “as may be defined by law.” However, Congress has yet to enact a law specifically defining and regulating political dynasties.
Castro’s remarks placed the proposed measure among the administration’s stated legislative priorities, while leaving the details of the bill and its timetable to Congress.
The Palace, however, did not provide further details on the specific provisions of the proposed legislation during the briefing. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
