QUEZON CITY, 26 March (PIA) - The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) supports a proposed bill that would extend educational assistance and benefits to dependents of members of law enforcement agencies, military men, and fire fighters who were killed in action or left permanently disabled while in the line of duty.
PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo G. Cacdac, Jr. said the agency supports Senate Bill No. 2687, authored by Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III to secure a better future of the children of our modern-day heroes have left behind.
“Senate Bill No. 2687 aims to grant educational benefits to children and qualified dependents of slain and totally incapacitated operatives of law enforcement agencies such as PDEA, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), soldiers of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), jail officers of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and firemen of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP),” Cacdac said.
According to PDEA, the proposed measure includes, but not limited to the payment of tuition and miscellaneous fees, allowances for books and school supplies and allowance for food and transportation.
The educational fund shall be provided by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and revenues from the licensure and registration fees of firearms being collected by the PNP.
“We would like to thank Senator Sotto for coming up with the bill. The scholarship privilege will be a huge morale boost among law enforcers. It is but a small token of gratitude compared to the lives and limbs sacrificed by these valiant men rendering patriotic service,” Cacdac added. (PDEA/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
