QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) has officially increased the leave credits for public school teachers from 15 to 30 days, a move intended to better support educators in managing their time off.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara signed DepEd Order No. 013, series of 2024, on September 18, with the new policy set to take effect 15 days after its publication. Here’s the link: https://www.deped.gov.ph/wp-content/uploads/DO_s2024_013.pdf

This updated policy applies to all public school teachers, including mobile teachers, regardless of their appointment status.

Under the new guidelines, teachers with at least one year of service, as well as those hired within four months after the school year begins, will be granted 30 leave credits for the entire calendar year. Those appointed later in the year will receive an increased total of 45 leave credits.

In addition to the expanded leave, the policy allows teachers to earn additional leave credits for extra hours worked. Specifically, for every hour spent beyond regular work hours on school days, teachers will receive 1.25 hours of leave credit.

The same rate applies for additional teaching tasks when overload pay is not available. Furthermore, teachers will earn 1.5 leave credits for each hour served during Christmas, summer, weekends, and holidays.

This adjustment reflects DepEd’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of teachers and ensuring fair compensation for their efforts, especially during extended breaks,” the department said. The changes are designed to help maintain teachers’ net take-home pay while recognizing their involvement in various DepEd activities at different levels.

To qualify for these additional leave credits, teachers must document their extra hours and obtain authorization from the Schools Division Superintendent. Required documentation includes a signed CS Form 48, School Form 8, and certifications regarding teaching overload and the availability of funds.

This initiative aims to support educators in balancing their professional responsibilities with personal time, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing the teaching profession in the Philippines. (AVS/PIA-NCR)
