QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — Quezon City (QC) is taking a major stride towards a greener future with the introduction of eight new electric buses to its public transportation fleet. This move marks a significant step in the city’s ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

“We are excited to launch these electric buses, a tangible demonstration of our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Mayor Joy Belmonte stated. “By embracing alternative energy sources, we are taking proactive steps to combat climate change.”

The new electric buses, each capable of carrying 41 seated passengers with additional standing room, are equipped with modern amenities for a comfortable and safe ride.

These include wheelchair ramps, handrails, fire suppression systems, CCTV cameras, and even smart televisions. This investment in sustainable transportation not only reduces emissions but also enhances the overall travel experience for QC residents.

These buses are compliant with the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA Law), which mandates that at least 5% of government fleets must be electric.

By replacing traditional diesel-powered buses with electric vehicles, Quezon City aims to reduce its reliance on internal combustion engines, a major contributor to air pollution.

The electrification of the city’s fleet is expected to significantly lower black carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

The electric buses will undergo initial testing in the coming weeks before being fully integrated into the city’s public transportation system.

Currently, Quezon City operates a fleet of 90 traditional buses that provide free transportation to commuters. (AVS/PIA-NCR)
