QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving disaster preparedness and science communication, the DANAS Project of DOST-Phivolcs has launched a series of Sourcebooks that emphasize local languages and community experiences.

The project, which stands for Earthquake, Tsunami, and Volcano Disaster Narratives for Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication, seeks to bridge the gap between technical information and community understanding.

The Sourcebooks, a collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMSU) – South La Union Campus, and the University of the Philippines – Visayas (UPV), will be unveiled in two phases. The first launch will feature Earthquake and Volcano Sourcebooks, along with video packages in Cebuano and Hiligaynon, on November 28, 2024, at Luxe Hotel in Cagayan De Oro City.

The second event, scheduled on Monday, December 9, at the Phivolcs Auditorium in Quezon City, will present Kapampangan and Tagalog Sourcebooks covering Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Tsunamis.

Language plays a key role in clear communication, especially in disaster risk reduction,” said Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, Director of DOST-Phivolcs.

We hope that these Sourcebooks will serve as a tool for promoting effective science communication,” he added.

Designed to be user-friendly, the Sourcebooks provide essential guides on geological hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, enhancing community preparedness and response capabilities.

The Sourcebooks are designed to ensure that communities are not only informed by scientific data but also able to relate to the information by integrating local stories,” said Dr. Ma. Mylene M. Villegas, DOST-Phivolcs Deputy Director and DANAS Project Leader.

By publishing these Sourcebooks in local languages, we are making vital knowledge more accessible and culturally relevant,” Villegas added.

The DANAS Project was officially launched in March 2023. This collaborative effort is funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development. (JVD/PIA-NCR)
