QUEZON CITY, (PIA)  QCitizens and fitness enthusiasts from nearby communities can now enjoy car-free Sunday mornings for recreational activities with friends and family at Tomas Morato in Quezon City.

The local government of Quezon City recently passed Ordinance No. SP-3345, S-2024, or the “Sunday Car-Free, Carefree Tomas Morato Ordinance of Quezon City” to make the roads more breathable and safe for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists.

“Car-Free Sundays reflect our vision of a sustainable, people-first Quezon City. We want to encourage outdoor activities, promote healthy living, and support our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Under the ordinance, a portion of Tomas Morato Avenue from Timog Avenue to Don Alejandro Roces Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic every first Sunday of the month from 6:00 am to 10:00 am for the first implementation phase of the car-free initiative.

After a year, the Quezon City government is set to implement the “Car-Free, Carefree Sundays” every other Sunday of the month to allow residents and visitors to engage in outdoor activities more frequently.

Aside from promoting active mobility and enhancing public health, the program will also be pivotal in helping the local businesses along Tomas Morato grow.

It can be recalled that the initiative to make Tomas Morato car-free on Sundays was initially implemented in December 2024 which received positive feedback from the public.

For traffic rerouting schemes, motorists are advised to get updates through the official Facebook account of the Quezon City Government which can be accessed here(JMP/PIA-NCR)
