QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) begins the construction of a water detention basin project in Manila.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the implementation of similar projects on other vacant lots, alongside the upgrading of drainage systems and pumping stations, to address flooding in parts of Metro Manila especially during the rainy season.
According to DPWH, the water detention basin project is located at Rajah Sulayman Plaza in Malate, Manila, and is designed to store rainwater equivalent to the volume of one-and-a-half Olympic-sized swimming pools to help mitigate flooding in the area.
Another catch basin is underway in Malate, Manila. This project aims to expand the drainage capacity of the San Andres and Remedios Street drainage systems by constructing a water detention basin that will serve as an overflow structure during heavy rains and high tide.
According to DPWH, the project is expected to be completed by January 2027.
The DPWH continues its efforts to improve and strengthen infrastructure that helps mitigate flooding and ensure the safety of affected communities. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
