‘Pamana Agham’ to showcase science, technology in Philippine Weaving

MANILA, (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology-National Capital Region (DOST-NCR), in collaboration with several government agencies, will host the second edition of “Pamana Agham: Siyensya sa Bawat Habi at Hibla” (Heritage of Science: Science in Every Weave and Thread), a celebration of Philippine history and culture through science and technology.

The event will take place on August 28-29, 2024, at Intramuros, Manila, and is part of DOST-NCR’s Science Beyond Borders campaign. The exhibition aims to highlight how science, technology, and innovation (STI) address challenges and create opportunities for Filipinos.

This year’s showcase will focus on the advancement of traditional weaving techniques through modern science and technology, featuring:

  • Pamana Agham–A blend of historical art and contemporary knowledge;
  • KatHABI Textile Innovation Exhibit–Displaying innovative textile designs and practices;
  • Sining Siyensya–Featuring artworks by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs);
  • TelaHanga–Demonstrating sustainable local fabric technology and industry advancements;
  • Tiny Thread Talk–A youth sewing competition aimed at promoting the next generation of local weaving talent.

The opening ceremony will include a significant agreement signing between DOST-NCR, PTRI, and PSE, and the launch of several key projects, including the SAFATOS Program or “Shoes and Footwear Accessories R&D Towards Omnibus Solutions“, which aims to provide material and digital solutions for the footwear industry by integrating the elements of Industry 4.0 in the Philippine footwear industry and provide S&T-based solutions to ensure local material availability and enhance the competitiveness of the local footwear industry.

The program also seeks to include the power of computer-aided tools and digitalization in the textile and footwear manufacturing sector seeking to have novel, innovative, and sustainable textile materials in all shoe parts while integrating digitalization, automation, and additive manufacturing into the process.

Pamana Agham” is a testament to the government’s commitment to promoting innovation and preserving cultural heritage.

The event is expected to draw a large audience of textile enthusiasts, scientists, and cultural heritage advocates. (GLG/PIA-NCR)
