QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Philippines celebrated the 2025 National Women’s Month with a ceremony at the SM Aura in Taguig City, launching a flagship initiative dubbed, “Thread of Empowerment” that integrates modern technology with traditional weaving practices to help women artisans expand their market reach.
The event, a collaboration between the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), Department of Science and Technology, and Philippine Textile Research Institute, blended traditional skills with modern technology to advance gender equality.
“We need to change the world, and we don’t have to do big things. We just have to start with our own lives,” said Ermelita V. Valdeavilla, PCW chairperson, emphasizing the importance of individual contributions to gender equality.
Government officials, community leaders and advocates discussed how partnerships, legislation and community programs can ensure women have equal access to economic opportunities, education, and social support.
Discussions highlighted the role of policies in ensuring women have equal access to economic opportunities, education and social support.
“Let us witness the convergence of science and art through empowering women,” said Diana Ignacio, DOST assistant secretary for administrative and legal affairs, highlighting how innovation is being integrated into traditional practices.
The event recognized initiatives that have improved the socioeconomic status of women in the Philippines. Presentations showcased collaborations between government agencies, nonprofits and local communities.
