QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – In the 15th episode of the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas (KBP) on Tuesday, September 3, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is expected to highlight the transformative programs that will further empower the sector of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in light of their significant contribution to the country’s overall economic development.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Arnaldo “Arnell” A. Ignacio will lead the media forum to discuss the agency’s initiatives in terms of catering to the welfare needs of OFWs at both national and international levels.

“[The] government seeks to transform the journey and the narrative of the OFWs and their families.  Through the DMW, we will empower OFWs and their families so that they can fulfill their potential as partners in national development,” the department stated.

The DMW will particularly shed light on the training, education, financial assistance, marketing support, and other social protection programs for OFWs and their families towards the goal of providing them with a stable future.

In addition, the department will give an overview of the implementation of the AKSYON Fund as well as the other legal, medical, and financial aid provided to distressed OFWs in close coordination with concerned stakeholders such as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and OWWA.

The media forum will likewise cover important discourse on the One Repatriation Command Center (ORCC), Livelihood Development Assistance Program (LDAP), and the National Reintegration Program as part of the stronger commitment of the DMW to further strengthen the protection of OFWs under the Bagong Pilipinas brand of governance.

This initiative is anchored on the continuing thrust of the national government to facilitate the ethical recruitment, fair employment, and the safe and orderly migration of OFWs.

It can be recalled that in the 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in July 2024, the concrete projects of the government for the welfare of OFWs were laid out.

These include the launching of additional facilities and services such as the OFW Lounge in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Seafarer’s Hub in Manila, provision of livelihood aid to returning OFWs, and the extension of necessary assistance to OFWs who were affected by the unrest in Israel, Gaza, Sudan, Lebanon, and Yemen, as well as those who suffered from the calamities in Taiwan and New Zealand.

The KBP is organized by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) through the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to bring timely, relevant, and accurate information about government programs and services to grassroots communities nationwide. (JMP/PIA-NCR)
